Contabo VPS Review 2026:Hosting for Growing Businesses

Contabo is a German-based web hosting services provider, offering anything from shared hosting, domain registrations, right through to dedicated servers and cloud solutions. I recently got the opportunity to test their services out, in particular their VPS servers, to see what they are all about, and if they are a good fit for you, the end user, in 2026. As someone who’s tested more hosting providers than I care to admit (or can remember for what its worth) , I was very intrigued by their bold, and almost arrogant, claims of offering “the best value Cloud VPS hosting on earth”, a statement they prominently display on their home page. The hosting market is very competitive, but Contabo seems to stand out with shockingly low prices for what appears to be excellent, and top-of-the-range hardware on all their servers. But is this German-based provider really such a diamond in the rough, or does their super-low rates come with too many compromises? In this review, I will look at the Contabo VPS plans in detail, scrutinize what you truly get (and what you don’t), and give you a clearer picture if they are worth considering.

Contabo’s philosophy is refreshingly straightforward – offer powerful, unmanaged virtual servers at a price that makes you double-check to make sure you are seeing correctly. It seems that they’re not trying to be the most user-friendly for beginners, but aim their offerings more for developers, sysadmins, and businesses that need raw resources without the managed-service markup fees. Let’s start this review by looking at each of their VPS plans.

Contabo VPS Hosting Plans Overview

An Assortment of Power

As soon as you land on their VPS page, you will notice the six distinct Cloud VPS plans, scaling from what they call a starter option to what can only be described as a small beast. Unlike providers that give you a server that is barely more powerful than some entry-level shared hosting plans, Contabo’s entry-level plan kicks off with an incredible 4 vCPU cores! It’s clear they are competing on specs-per-Euro, and on paper, it is really impressive.

All their VPS plans are unmanaged, and that means that you, the end user, have full root access and completely responsible for your server setup, all its security, software updates, and troubleshooting when things go south. Your server comes with a dedicated IPv4 and IPv6 address, and you can choose your operating system from multiple Linux operating systems, as well as Windows (This will cost you extra). All their plans run on high-performance AMD processors and blazing-fast NVMe disk drives. You will also notice that just above the 6 plans there is a toggle switch “VPS with Auto Backup”. Switch it on and it will display the 6 plans with auto backup included, with a slight jump in cost.

Let’s take a look at each of the 6 plans individually, and see what they offer:

The Contabo Cloud VPS 10 Plan

Their Budget Powerhouse

Priced at an almost unbelievable €3.60 per month (on a 12-month contract), this is where Contabo turns heads. This plan redefines entry-level. With 8 GB of RAM, it’s capable of handling substantial applications, development environments, or multiple websites right out of the gate. It includes:

The Contabo Cloud VPS 20 Plan

The Sweet Spot

For €5.60 per month (12-month contract), this is frequently touted as their best-value plan, and for good reason. This plan offers a perfect balance for growing projects, medium-traffic web apps, or small database servers. It includes:

  • 6 vCPU Cores;
  • 12GB RAM;
  • 100GB NVMe Disk Space;
  • 300 Mbit/s Port with Unlimited Traffic;
  • 2 Snapshots Recoveries.

The Contabo Cloud VPS 30 Plan

The Performance Leap

This VPS plan is significantly more expensive than the previous two, but it also takes a huge jump in resources allocated. It goes for €11.20 per month at the time of writing, and is ideal for resource-intensive applications, busy e-commerce platforms, or serving as a robust backend server. This plan comes with:

  • 8 vCPU Cores;
  • 24GB RAM;
  • 200GB NVMe Storage Space;
  • 600 Mbit/s Port with Unlimited Traffic;
  • 3 Snapshots Recoveries.

The Contabo Cloud VPS 40 Plan

The Enterprise Workhorse

Priced at €20.00 per month, this is where Contabo’s offerings shift decisively into the territory of serious business infrastructure. This plan is best suited for handling complex and multi-faceted workloads. It includes a whopping 48GB of RAM, and is an ideal candidate for virtualization (hosting several smaller virtual machines), or large database servers (like MySQL or PostgreSQL for big applications), or it can even be used as a primary server for a medium-sized digital agencies hosting numerous client sites, although one need to keep in mind that the space is limited to 250GB. The 800 Mbit/s port ensures robust data throughput for demanding applications. This plan includes:

  • 12 vCPU Cores;
  • 48GB DDR4 RAM;
  • 250GB NVMe Disk Space;
  • 800 Mbit/s Port with Unlimited Traffic* (Fair Use Policy applies on this plan);
  • 3 Snapshots Recoveries.

The Contabo Cloud VPS 50 Plan

The High-Performance Option

At €29.60 per month, this plan delivers formidable power for specialized, resource-intensive projects. The network speeds jumps to a full 1 Gbps, and 16 vCPUs makes it perfect for high-traffic and demanding web applications, advanced data processing, media encoding servers, or it could serve as a robust backend for machine learning inference and model serving. There is enough headroom for applications where consistent, high-speed performance is critical. This beast of a server includes:

  • 16 vCPU Cores;
  • 64GB DDR4 RAM;
  • 300GB NVMe Storage Space;
  • 1 Gbit/s Port with Unlimited Traffic (Fair Use Policy applies on this plan);
  • 3 Snapshots Recoveries.

The Contabo Cloud VPS 60 Plan

The Ultimate Powerhouse

Lastly, they offer the VPS 60 plan as Contabo’s top-tier VPS offering. It will set you back €39.20 per month, but in my opinion, it is well worth it as this plan provides near-dedicated server levels of virtualized resources. This plan comes with a very generous 96GB of RAM, as well as 18 vCPUs, it is perfect for the heaviest of workloads, such as big e-commerce websites, very busy multi-player gaming servers, or could even serve as the infrastructure for a decent-sized SaaS application. This perfectly fills the gap for projects that have outgrown standard VPS solutions but aren’t really there yet for a full dedicated server. Definitely one to consider! This plan comes with:

  • 18 vCPU Cores;
  • 96GB DDR4 RAM;
  • 350GB NVMe Disk Space;
  • 1 Gbit/s Port with Unlimited Traffic (Fair Use Policies again applies);
  • 3 Snapshots Recoveries.

Before I move on to the next section in this review, I would like to stress that the advertised “Unlimited Traffic” is governed by a fair usage policy. Contabo clearly states they may throttle servers with, and I quote “exceptionally high or disruptive usage patterns.” So for most users this won’t be an issue, but for those that try to take advantage with extreme and constant bandwidth saturation, it might just be, so it’s worth keeping that in mind. Also, note that prices are in Euros and VAT is included.

Key Features

& Where Contabo Stands Out

Pure Hardware Power: The combination they have on their servers of premium AMD CPUs and super-fast NVMe storage drives provides excellent performance, especially for the price they charge. Starting with 4 vCPUs and 8 GB RAM, even the bottom tier is a solid choice.

Global Flexibility: You can deploy in 11 locations across 9 global regions, which is fantastic for getting as close in terms of latency to your target audience.

DevOps & Automation Ready: They offer a functional API, a CLI tool, as well as support for custom images such as .iso and .qcow2, cloud-init scripts, and even SSH key deployment. This makes Contabo a very compelling option for automated workflows and scaling.

Always-On DDoS Protection: If you have read some of my previous reviews, you will know how much a value security, and that I strongly believe DDoS protection should be included in any type of hosting plan. Luckily, this is included at the network level on Contabo servers, providing a basic security blanket against common attacks.

Snapshot recoveries: The ability to take snapshots (1-3 depending on the plan you are on) directly from the control panel is a vital feature for backups and safe updates.

Purchase & Registration

As with most quality providers these days, the sign-up process is super-easy and quick. You just need to open any browser and head to www.contabo.com, and then click on the “VPS” button in the top main menu, and then on “Cloud VPS” on the dropdown menu that will appear. The plans are clearly displayed, and after making your choice, just click on “Get Started” on the plan you would like. The next page will show a short summary of your plan, and below that the option to choose between monthly, semi-annual, or annual billing cycles, as well as the OS and any extras you would like to add. Right at the bottom of the page you also need to provide a password for your server, and after this you can click “Next” to finish the sign-up process by entering your personal details and payment method. Extremely quick and easy!

What’s Included and What’s NOT Included

This I reckon is the most critical section for understanding the Contabo deal.

INCLUDED with your Contabo VPS:

  • The stated vCPUs, RAM, and blazing-fast NVMe Storage.
  • Full root/administrator access.
  • A dedicated IPv4 and IPv6 address.
  • Decent variety of OS options (Linux images are free).
  • Basic DDoS protection (still far better than nothing even if it is basic).
  • Snapshot recoveries
  • 24/7 support for server infrastructure issues, such as hardware, network, and provisioning.

What’s NOT INCLUDED (Things You Are Responsible For):

Server Management: This is 100% unmanaged hosting. You install software, configure web servers (Apache/Nginx), databases (MySQL, etc.), run security updates, set up firewalls (like UFW or iptables), and handle all software-level troubleshooting.

Backups: These are not included by default, but like I mentioned before in this review, there’s a toggle switch right above the plans that will give you the option to sign up for the plan with backups included.

5-thumb.png

Software Support: Their support team will not help you install WordPress, debug PHP errors, configure an email server, or fix your website code. Their responsibility stops with server health.

Email Hosting: You must set up and manage your own email if you need it.

Support:

What to Expect

Contabo provides 24/7 support in English via live chat, as well as support tickets. In my experience the agents are very well trained, reply quickly, and definitely know their way around server issues. They are truly setting the bar high when it comes to customer support! One needs to note though, that they are responsive for infrastructure problems, so if your server is down, the network is unreachable, or there’s a hardware failure, they will act quickly, but don’t expect any “hand-holding”, as they won’t guide you through basic Linux commands or web server configurations.

They also have a very handy knowledge base on their website, great for the type of user that like to do troubleshooting themselves. This also includes video tutorials.

Pros & Cons:

The Honest Breakdown

Pros:

Unbeatable Value: The amount of RAM and CPU you get per Euro is probably the best in the market. Bundle this with their excellent support and uptime, and there’s really very little not to like.

Transparent, Stable Pricing: No confusing introductory discounts that triple at renewal. The price you sign up for is largely the price you keep.

High Resource Limits: Perfect for memory-intensive applications, development/staging servers, and users who need real root control.

DevOps-Friendly Features: The API, CLI, and custom image support are serious tools for technical users.

Cons:

Fully Unmanaged: This is a deal-breaker for those without sysadmin skills. You must be comfortable with the command line.

No Control Panel Included: Adds significant extra cost and setup complexity for users reliant on cPanel.

Support Scope is Limited: You are on your own for all software and application issues.

“Unlimited Traffic” has Fair Use: Not truly unlimited for 100% constant maximum port utilization.

My Verdict

Is a VPS Contabo Server the Right Option for You in 2026?

The answer is a resounding YES if you ask me, and that’s not even debatable! Contabo offers premium hardware, well-structured plans with plenty of disk space and resources, excellent uptime, and great support, for a fraction of the price some providers charge. For developers, a tech-savvy business owner, systems administrators, or simply someone running complex applications their plans fit perfectly. In this review I am not even going to write a “Maybe they are NOT the right fit” section, as I like everything about them! If you are in the market for a new VPS provider, be sure to check them out! For the right user, it’s not just a good deal—it’s a steal.
